I have an 1884 Springfield trap door serial number 280,xxx. Is it safe to shoot modern factory 45-70's in it?

NO. You need to use reduced loads. I looked at a few of those  in an estate sale a while back and did some research on the topic. There's a guy whose fettish collection gun is the Trapdoor. He's in Las Vegas and loads rounds up for it.

I load 70 gr. 2ffg blackpowder and a 405 gr, lead bullet in mine. That was the original load for the trapdoors.

Thanks for the input. Last thing I want to do is ruin a nice piece of history. Any special primer or will any large rifle do?
